Verse 187

உருவும்அல்ல ஒளியும் அல்ல ஒன்றதாகி நின்றதே
மருவும்அல்ல கந்தம்அல்ல மந்தநாடி உற்றதல்ல
பெரியதல்ல சிறியதல்ல பேசும்ஆவி தானும்அல்ல
அரியதாக நின்றநேர்மை யாவர்காண வல்லிரே.

Uruvumalla oliyum alla onradhaagi ninradhee
Maruvumalla kandhamalla mandhanaadi utradhalla
Periyadhalla siriyadhalla peesumaavi thaanumalla
Ariyadhaaga ninraneermai yaavargaana valliree.

உரை

நேதி-நேதி (இதுவல்ல, இதுவல்ல) என்ற உபநிடத தத்துவத்தின் வழி பரம்பொருளின் எல்லை கடந்த தன்மையை சிவவாக்கியர் விவரிக்கிறார். அந்த ஆதிப் பரம்பொருள் புலன்களால் அறியப்படும் உருவமும் அல்ல; புறக் கண்களால் காணும் ஒளியும் அல்ல; ஆனால் எல்லாவற்றிலும் ஒன்றாய் நிறைந்து நிற்கிறது. அது வாசனையோ மணமோ அல்ல; மந்தமான புற நாடிகளுக்குள் கட்டுப்படுவதும் அல்ல; அளக்கக்கூடிய பெருமையோ சிறுமையோ அதற்கு இல்லை; பேசி இயங்கும் இந்த தனிப்பட்ட சீவனும் அதுவல்ல. சொல்லுக்கும் கருத்துக்கும் எட்டாமல் நுண்ணியதாய் நிற்கும் அந்தப் பரம்பொருளின் நேரான மெய்ந்நிலையை அகமுகமாய் உணர்ந்து தரிசிக்க வல்லவர்கள் உலகத்தில் எவரோ என்று சித்தர் வியக்கிறார்.

A string of refusals tries to clear a space. It is not form and not light, and it stands as one. It is not a stain and not a smell, and it is not something that happened to the slow channel. It is not large and not small, and it is not itself the speaking breath. What remains is a straightness that stands as the rare thing. The last line asks who is able to see it. The negations are the approach. The dare is the sight.

The teaching

A relentless Neti-Neti (not this, not that) deconstruction of the Ultimate Reality. The Supreme is neither physical form (உருவம்) nor perceptible light (ஒளி), yet it stands as undivided, non-dual Oneness (ஒன்றதாகி நின்றதே). It is neither a stain nor a fragrance; it is not an event bound to the slow, sluggish nadi channels; it is neither macrocosmic magnitude (பெரியதல்ல) nor microcosmic minuteness (சிறியதல்ல); it is not even the embodied, talking individual soul / breath (பேசும் ஆவி தானும் அல்ல). Sivavakkiyar asks with mystical awe: who has the rare, refined intuitive vision to perceive this peerless, unconditioned, straight Truth (அரியதாக நின்ற நேர்மை)? To realize the Divine, one must transcend all physical attributes, mental categories, and subtle energetic states, resting in the pure transcendent Void.

Verse 188

ஓரெழுத்து உலகெலாம் உதித்த அட்சரத்துளே
ஈரெழுத்து இயம்புகின்ற இன்பமேது அறிகிலீர்
மூவெழுத்து மூவராய் மூண்டெழுந்த மூர்த்தியை
நாலெழுத்து நாவிலே நவின்றதே சிவாயமே.

Orezhuththu ulagelaam udhiththa atsaraththulee
Iirezhuththu iyambuginra inpameedhu arigiliir
Muuvezhuththu muuvaraay muundezhundha muurththiyai
Naalezhuththu naavilee navinradhee sivaayamee.

உரை

அட்சரங்களின் வழியே பிரபஞ்சத் தோற்றத்தையும் மந்திர சூட்சுமத்தையும் சிவவாக்கியர் தெளிவுபடுத்துகிறார். ஓரெழுத்தாகிய பிரணவத்திலிருந்தே (ஓம்) அகில உலகங்களும் தோன்றின; அந்த பிரணவத்துள் சிவசக்தியாய் விளங்கும் ஈரெழுத்து (சி-வ) அருளும் பரம இன்பத்தை உலகத்தார் அறிவதில்லை. அகர, உகர, மகரங்கள் கூடிய மூவெழுத்தினால் பிரம்மா, விஷ்ணு, ருத்திரன் என மும்மூர்த்திகளாய் மூண்டெழுந்த பரம்பொருளை, வேதம் நான்கும் நாவினால் போற்றும் பரம ரகசியமே 'சிவாயம்' என்னும் பஞ்சாட்சரமாகும். அட்சரங்களின் மூலத்தில் சிவசக்தி ஐக்கியத்தை உணர்வதே பிறப்பறுக்கும் ஞானமாகும்.

Letters are counted up from one to four. In the one letter, inside the syllable from which the whole world arose, you still do not know the joy that the two letters utter. The three letters rose as the three, one form. What the tongue recited as the four letters is Sivayam. The verse climbs the count and lands the fourfold recitation on that name. It does not stop to spell the letters out.

The teaching

The ascending progression of cosmic sound and mantra theology. From the single primordial letter (ஓரெழுத்து = the Pranava Omkara), the entire cosmos emanated. Trapped in external distractions, human beings remain completely ignorant of the supreme, unitive bliss uttered by the two letters (ஈரெழுத்து = 'Si-Va', the union of Shiva and Shakti). The three letters (மூவெழுத்து = A-U-M / the Trimurti of Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra) manifested as the cosmic triad from a single supreme Form. And what the tongue continuously chants as the sacred four letters is none other than Sivayam (சி-வா-ய-ம்)! Sivavakkiyar reveals that from the singular seed of cosmic sound to the manifestation of deities and languages, everything is crowned and perfected in the liberating vibration of Sivayam.

Verse 189

ஆதிஅந்த மூலவிந்து நாதம்ஐந்து பூதமாய்
ஆதிஅந்த மூலவிந்து நாதம்ஐந் தெழுத்துமாய்
ஆதிஅந்த மூலவிந்து நாதம்மேவி நின்றதும்
ஆதிஅந்த மூலவிந்து நாதமே சிவாயமே.

Aadhiandha muulavindhu naadhamaindhu puudhamaay
Aadhiandha muulavindhu naadhamain thezhuththumaay
Aadhiandha muulavindhu naadhammeevi ninradhum
Aadhiandha muulavindhu naadhamee sivaayamee.

உரை

பிரபஞ்சத்தின் ஆதியந்தமாய் விளங்கும் விந்து-நாத தத்துவமே சிவாயம் என்பதை சிவவாக்கியர் சந்த நடையில் முழங்குகிறார். அனைத்துப் படைப்புகளுக்கும் தொடக்கமும் முடிவுமாய் இருக்கும் மூல விந்துவும் மூல நாதமுமே பஞ்சபூதங்களாய் விரிந்து நிற்கின்றன; அந்த விந்து-நாத அசைவே நமசிவாய என்னும் திருவைந்தெழுத்தாய் மிளிர்கிறது. அகிலங்கள் எங்கும் நீக்கமறப் பொருந்தி நிற்பதும் அந்த விந்துவும் நாதமுமேயாகும். தொடக்கமும் முடிவும் அற்ற அந்த மூல விந்து-நாத சங்கமமே பஞ்சாட்சரத்தின் மெய்ப்பொருளாகிய 'சிவாயம்' ஆகும் என்பதை உணர்ந்து அகத்தில் லயிக்க வேண்டும்.

The same four terms are sung four times: beginning, end, the root-bindu, and nada. First they stand as the five elements. Then they stand as the five letters. Then they are what abides, pervading. Last, the nada among them is Sivayam. Repetition does the work of an argument. Each return keeps the terms and changes what they are said to be, until sound and the name are one.

The teaching

A rhythmic, incantatory litany establishing Nada and Bindu as the foundation of all reality. The beginning and end of all things (ஆதி அந்தம்), the primordial causal seed (மூல விந்து / Bindu), and the unstruck cosmic vibration (நாதம் / Nada) manifested first as the five gross elements (பஞ்ச பூதங்கள்: earth, water, fire, air, space). That very same beginningless Nada-Bindu matrix crystallized as the sacred Five Letters (ஐந்தெழுத்து / Panchakshara). It is that same Nada-Bindu that permeates and sustains every pore of creation; and in the supreme mystical culmination, Sivavakkiyar reveals that this beginningless, endless Nada-Bindu IS nothing other than Sivayam! Sound, cosmos, elements, and divine consciousness are one unbroken, radiant continuum.

Verse 190

அன்னம்இட்ட பேரெலாம் அனேககோடி வாழவே
சொன்னமிட்ட பேரெலாம் துரைத்தனங்கள் பண்ணலாம்
விண்ணம்இட்ட பேரேலாம் வீழ்வர்வெந் நரகிலே
கன்னம்இட்ட பேரெலாம் கடந்துநின்றல் திண்ணமே!

Annamitta peerelaam aneegagodi vaazhavee
Sonnamitta peerelaam thuraiththanangal pannalaam
Vinnamitta peereelaam viizhvarven naragilee
Kannamitta peerelaam kadandhuninral thinnamee!

உரை

உலகியல் புண்ணியங்களுக்கும் ஆன்ம முக்திக்கும் இடையே உள்ள வேறுபாட்டை சிவவாக்கியர் அறுதியிடுகிறார். பசித்தவர்க்கு அன்னதானம் செய்தவர்கள் கோடி காலங்கள் நீண்ட ஆயுளோடு மண்ணில் வாழலாம்; பொன்னையும் பொருளையும் தானமாக ஈந்தவர்கள் உலகத்தில் அதிகாரமும் அரசுரிமையும் பெற்று ஆளலாம். ஆனால் வஞ்சகமும் பிளவும் செய்தவர்கள் கொடிய நரகத்தில் வீழ்வர். இவற்றுக்கெல்லாம் மேலாக, அகந்தையின் கோட்டையைத் துளையிட்டு (கன்னமிட்டு) மாயா திரையை உடைத்து உள்நுழைந்த மெய்ஞ்ஞானிகளோ பிறவிப் பெருங்கடலை முற்றிலும் கடந்து நிற்பது திண்ணமாகும். புண்ணியங்கள் மறுபிறவியைத் தரும்; ஆனால் அகந்தையை உடைப்பதே நிரந்தர முக்தியைத் தரும்.

Gifts are sorted by what they buy. Everyone who set down food lives on through many crores. Everyone who set down gold may play the lord and hold office. Everyone who set down a petition falls into the hot hell. The last gift is the printed கன்னம், and its exact sense beside food, gold, and petitions is uncertain. Those who set that down, if they stand having crossed, the line says the crossing is certain.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar distinguishes between worldly karmic charity (அறம் / தானம்) and spiritual transcendence. Those who give food (அன்னதானம்) to feed hungry bellies earn longevity and prosperity across many crores of lifetimes; those who gift gold (சொர்ணம் / சொன்னம்) gain earthly authority, rulership, and aristocratic dominion (துரைத்தனம்). But those who foster divisions, betrayal, or deceitful petitions (விண்ணம் / விள்ளல்) tumble into the scorching fires of hell. In contrast, those who penetrate the barrier / make the secret spiritual breakthrough into the inner sanctum (கன்னமிட்ட பேர் = like an esoteric thief breaking through the wall of ego, or offering genuine humble surrender at the cheek/threshold) triumphantly cross the ocean of birth and death (கடந்து நிற்றல் திண்ணமே). Worldly charity yields temporary worldly fruit, but shattering the fortress of ego guarantees permanent liberation.

Verse 191

ஓதொணாமல் நின்றநீர் உறக்கம்ஊணும் அற்றநீர்
சாதிபேதம் அற்றநீர் சங்கையின்றி நின்ற நீர்
கோதிலாத அறிவிலே குறிப்புணர்ந்து நின்றநீர்
ஏதும்இன்றி நின்றநீர் இயங்குமாறு எங்ஙனே?

Odhonaamal ninraniir urakkamuunum atraniir
Saadhipeedham atraniir sangaiyinri ninra niir
Kodhilaadha arivilee kurippunarndhu ninraniir
Eedhuminri ninraniir iyangumaaru engnganee?

உரை

சீவன் முக்தரின் சகச சமாதி நிலையையும் அவர்களின் வியத்தகு தன்மையையும் சிவவாக்கியர் பரவசத்தோடு போற்றுகிறார். வாயினால் ஓதும் நூல்களையும் மந்திரங்களையும் கடந்து நின்றவரே! உடலின் உறக்கத்தையும் உணவையும் கூடத் துறந்து நிற்கும் தூயவரே! சாதி குல பேதங்களை வேரறுத்து எவ்வித சந்தேகமும் ஐயமும் இன்றித் தெளிந்து நின்றவரே! மாசற்ற தூய பேரறிவிலே பரம்பொருளின் உட்கூறிப்பை உணர்ந்து, 'யான், எனது' என்ற பற்றுகள் ஏதுமின்றி நின்றவரே! பிரம்மத்தோடு இரண்டறக் கலந்துவிட்ட நீர், இந்த உலகத்தில் உடலோடு எவ்வாறு இயங்குகிறீர்? உலக மாயையைத் தாண்டிப் பிரம்மமாய் வாழும் ஜீவன் முக்தரின் நிலையை இப்பாடல் வியந்து வணங்குகிறது.

A person is described by what has dropped away. You stand unable to chant. Sleep and food are gone. Caste division is gone. You stand without doubt. In knowledge that has no flaw you have caught the mere sign, and you stand. Then you stand with nothing at all. The singer's question is tender and direct. You who stand like this, how is it that you still move?

The teaching

A deeply moving portrait of the Sahaja Samadhi and Jivanmukti (living liberation) of the realized Siddha. You have transcended the need for verbal chanting and scriptural recitation (ஓதொணாமல் நின்ற நீர்); your attachment to bodily sleep and material food has completely dropped away (உறக்கம் ஊணும் அற்ற நீர்); you have completely eradicated the toxic illusion of caste distinctions and social divisions (சாதிபேதம் அற்ற நீர்); you stand devoid of all skepticism and philosophical doubt (சங்கை இன்றி நின்ற நீர்). Anchored in flawless, unblemished pure Consciousness (கோதிலாத அறிவு), intuitively perceiving the subtle divine sign, you abide having surrendered all possessions and ego-attachments (ஏதும் இன்றி நின்ற நீர்). Sivavakkiyar asks with profound mystical tenderness: having dissolved completely into the unconditioned void of Being, how is it that you still walk and function within this mortal world?

Verse 192

பிறந்தபொது கோவணம் இலங்குநூல் குடுமியும்
பிறந்ததுடன் பிறந்ததோ, பிறங்குநூலி உடங்கெலாம்
மறந்தநாலு வேதமும் மனத்துளே உதித்ததோ?
நிலம்பிளந்து வான்இடிந்து நின்றதுஎன்ன வல்லீரே?

Pirandhapodhu kovanam ilangunuul kudumiyum
Pirandhadhudan pirandhadho, pirangunuuli udangelaam
Marandhanaalu veedhamum manaththulee udhiththadho?
Nilambilandhu vaanidindhu ninradhuenna valliiree?

உரை

பிறப்பால் வரும் சாதி பேதங்களையும் வேதியர்களின் போலி மேட்டிமைவாதத்தையும் சிவவாக்கியர் சுட்டெரிக்கும் கேள்விகளால் தகர்க்கிறார். தாயின் கருப்பையிலிருந்து நீங்கள் பிறந்த போது, கோவணமும் மார்பில் மின்னும் பூணூல் கயிறும் தலையில் குடுமியுமாகவா பிறந்தீர்கள்? இவை உடலோடு சேர்ந்து பிறந்தவையா? மறந்துபோன நால்வேதங்களும் பிறந்த குழந்தையாய் இருக்கும் போதே உங்கள் மனதில் உதித்துவிட்டனவா? அனைத்தும் சமமாகப் பிறக்கும் போது செயற்கையாக சாதி வேற்றுமைகளைக் கற்பித்துக் கொண்டு, அந்தப் பொய்மை உடையும் போது பூமி பிளந்து வானமே இடிந்து விழுந்துவிட்டது போலப் பதறுவது எத்தகைய மூடத்தனம்! இயற்கை படைப்பில் அனைத்து மனிதர்களும் சமமே என்பதை எவராலும் மறுக்க முடியாது.

The marks of a ritual life are asked whether they were born with the child. At the moment of birth, was the loincloth there, the shining thread, the tuft of hair? The printed next line is compressed. Were they born along with the birth, the shining thread and the whole body? Did the four forgotten Vedas rise inside the mind? Earth splitting and the sky falling, the singer asks the capable one what this upheaval of custom is.

The teaching

One of Sivavakkiyar's most lethal and iconic attacks on the hereditary caste hierarchy and the myth of priestly supremacy. At the moment you emerged naked from your mother's womb (பிறந்த போது), did you arrive wearing a sacred loincloth, a shining sacred thread across your chest (இலங்கு நூல்), and a priestly tuft on your head (குடுமி)? Did these ritual markers of high-caste superiority grow naturally as part of your physical body? Did the four forgotten Vedas spontaneously dawn inside your infant mind at birth? Why then do you invent artificial social hierarchies and claim divine pedigree over fellow human beings? Sivavakkiyar boldly proclaims that if the artificial foundations of caste and ritual superstition were exposed and demolished, orthodoxy would cry out as though the earth were splitting open and the sky collapsing (நிலம் பிளந்து வான் இடிந்து நின்றது). Nature creates all humans equal; caste is a man-made fraud.
